The BonTon Stores, Inc., founded in 1898, operates quality fashion department stores offering a broad assortment of women’s and men’s apparel, home furnishings, cosmetics, accessories and shoes. The Company’s 73 department stores are located in targeted markets throughout the Northeast: 36 stores in Pennsylvania, 26 stores in New York, three stores in each of Maryland and New Jersey and one store in each of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and West Virginia. The stores vary in size from approximately 33,000 to 160,000 gross square feet, with 49 stores having less than 90,000 gross square feet. The BonTon approaches its business with a smaller market focus, positioning itself as the leading fashion retailer providing moderate and better branded merchandise along with the convenience of local department store shopping.
2002 FOCUS: Delivering productivity gains and increasing operating efficiencies. The following strategic initiatives will be employed:

better and moderate goods
Strengthening the Company’s private brand
Customizing the merchandise assortments by market
Improving inventory management

Management Team:
Tim Grumbacher, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, joined the Company in 1961 and has been Chairman of the Board since August 1991. He reassumed the position of Chief Executive Officer in June 2000.
Frank Tworecke, Vice Chairman and Chief Merchandising Officer, joined the Company in November 1999. From January 1996 until November 1999, he was President and Chief Operating Officer of Jos. A. Bank Clothiers.
James H. Baireuther, Vice Chairman, Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer since September 2001. From June 1996 to February 2000, he was Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and from February 2000 to September 2001, he was Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Baireuther was previously with Sears, Roebuck and Co. for over 20 years.
